Le Tour's French Renaissance

Howabout that! One Frenchman is wearing the yellow jersey and another is celebrating the most magnificent of stage wins.

Tour missing le sprints
08 July 2008 | 11:35
Three days down already and can you believe we still haven’t witnessed a mass sprint for the pure sprinters? Ok, yesterday we saw Thor Hushovd take line honours. But it was a long drag up to the finish, a few crashes thrown in and there weren’t many other sprinters present to challenge the strong Norwegian.

Valverde's intriguing tactics
07 July 2008 | 10:03
Is Alejandro Valverde under threat of burning out? I was always under the impression the first week of the Tour should always be reserved for the sprinters, while the mountain specialists save their legs for the bigger, more decisive stages ahead.

No yellow but Cadel's fate is in safe hands

One stage down and Alejandro Valderve wears the yellow jersey. A fine first-up showing by the Spaniard and it sets the stage for a captivating battle on this lap of France.

Time for the sprinters
06 July 2008 | 21:36
Sunday's second stage will be a day for the marquee sprinters. My prediction is Robbie McEwen, coming off great form in the Tour de Suisse where he claimed two stage wins and he knows how to perform on the big stage.

Wizards of Oz all the rage
05 July 2008 | 13:16
It certainly is a golden time for Australians at the Tour de France. Expectations are high. But the number of media representatives who packed into the Ibis Hotel’s converted dining room in Brest for Silence-Lotto’s official pre-race conference certainly caught me by surprise.

Going from the gun
05 July 2008 | 12:07
Welcome to the Grand Depart for Le Tour 2008! Brest, a quaint fishing port at France’s western-most point feels a little like Victor Harbour – one of the traditional stage finishes for the Tour Down Under. Right now on Friday it’s raining, cold and windy. If the conditions persist, Saturday looks set to be a long, nervous day in the saddle for the protagonists as the peloton sweeps its way along the narrow winding roads of coastal Brittany.
