The landscape of the Tour de France is changing with every passing year. It’s not surprising Australians are the flavour of the month over here with the success of Cadel Evans. But the knock-on effects are endless.

Ten stages down and we’ve almost thumbed our way through half of the Tour de France race book for 2008. It’s all happened so fast I can hardly remember the start in wet and windy Brittany – especially given the high drama of the past two days as Cadel Evans’ stocks plummeted then shot back up to record levels.

Could Cadel Evans really be out of the Tour de France? It's as if I had woken up in a cold sweat when the news was delivered of Cadel's prognosis after his dramatic crash on the road in Stage 9.

Three stages in – Brest–Plumelec, Auray–St Brieuc, St Malo–Nantes – and truth be told I have yet to be emboldened/dumb/masochistic enough to sit through all of it. There's something rather underwhelming about the early stages of a race, like the early rounds of the US Masters.

Now that the Tour de France is over and my celebrity is going through the roof (cough), I think I may put in a call to Serge Borlée, Cadel Evans's hulking bodyguard. I'm gonna be needing some protection from the cycling groupies. They're a persistent mob.
